Kenyan singer and songwriter Hildah Watiri has been named the cover artist for Spotify’s Fresh Finds Africa playlist for April 2026. This marks a significant moment in her emergence among the continent’s next wave of stars.

Fresh Finds Africa is a monthly program curated to spotlight rising and independent artists shaping the African music scene. It also keeps music lovers updated on fresh and exciting talent. Hildah Watiri will headline the playlist with her hit song “Fall.”
Beyond the placement, Watiri’s rise has been building steadily:
From Media Student to Emerging Voice
Beyond her soulful musical voice, Hildah Watiri possesses a journalistic edge. Between 2018 and 2022, she studied at the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication (KIMC), where she trained as both an ECN Radio presenter and a multimedia journalist. Hildah Watiri’s background in journalism helped shape her transition into music, sharpening her storytelling and communication style.
She also studied at the 5 Star Nairobi School of Music, formerly Ruth Matete Music Academy, where she learnt to play the guitar.
A Sound Built on Storytelling
Watiri crafts a unique sonic identity at the crossroads of Afro-soul and R&B, where deep emotion and storytelling take centre stage.
Her 2020 debut EP, Blooming @22, marked her arrival in the Kenyan indie scene, with tracks like “Storyteller” defining her melodic, introspective, and deeply authentic sound.
Breakthrough and Momentum
Lovestruck (2024), her sophomore project featuring collaborations with artists such as Njerae and Kinoti, marked a turning point in her career. The project expanded her reach while maintaining her core sound. The standout single “Amini” (featuring Njerae) became her first track to surpass 1 million streams on Spotify.
Global Recognition and Fresh Finds Moment
Watiri’s spot on the Fresh Finds Africa cover underscores the shift towards genre-fluid, discovery-driven music across the continent.
Through a string of hits, including “Hale,” which draws from classic Kenyan influences (”Haya” by Harry Kimani), as well as newer singles like “Fall” and “Far,” she continues to position herself at the forefront of contemporary R&B in the region.
As platforms such as Fresh Finds Africa continue to evolve into global launch pads, Watiri’s presence at the forefront of this playlist underscores both her trajectory and the growing influence of Kenyan artists within Africa’s evolving soundscape.
Crafting a Distinctive Sonic Identity
By weaving modern R&B sensibilities such as smooth vocal layering, contemporary production, and emotionally driven song writing into the rhythmic and melodic foundation of Afro-soul, Watiri creates a sound that feels both fresh and familiar.
Through projects, such as Watiri’s Tuesday Acoustic Sessions, she leans into stripped-back performance and reinterpretation. This highlights a vocal style that emphasizes emotion, control, and storytelling.
The Big Picture
While Fresh Finds Africa is updated on a rolling basis, its monthly cover selections and the entire playlist offer snapshots of artists shaping the current moment. The April playlist also features other Kenyan artists Zaituni (#4), Kahuti feat. Kinoti (#8), Modest Chabari (#25), and Mumbi (#29).
For April, that spotlight rests on Hildah Watiri.
